UK born Hester Ullyart is an actor, writer, poet and director, a multi-disciplinary international artist working in theatre, film and music. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. She is currently based between England and Aotearoa.

 

Written and performed independent work includes; The Ballad of Paragon Station (NZ Fringe Award ‘Stellar Content 2020’, Paragon Dreams (Hull Truck UK/ Touring/ Auckland Writers Festival 2022), Notes on a Migration (Tiny Fest 2021), and award-winning film I am all the rooms of the house (HOME MCR/RADA 2020).

 

Hester’s debut album, The All Clear is in production with Ōtautahi based producer Ryan Fisherman, horizon for release in 2023.

 

Screen highlights include climate activist Rosa in crime drama One Lane Bridge (TVNZ/GSTV), Emmerdale (ITV), Cracker (Granada), Doctors (BBC) Heartbeat (ITV) and One of Us is Lying (Netflix).

 

She has worked for many of the UK and NZ’s foremost theatre companies, specialising in contemporary and classical plays with an alternative element. Theatre highlights include Emilia in Othello, A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s Titania, Viola in Twelfth Night, The Orange Tree London’s Macbeth, Miss Casewell in The Mousetrap,and Una in David Harrower’s Blackbird. She has appeared in A Streetcar Named Desire (Court Theatre) and Sweet Bird of Youth (Chichester Festival Theatre. Whilst in training Hester was RADA representative for the Sam Wanamaker Festival, Shakespeare’s Globe.

 

Her writing has been featured in A Fine Line, Catalyst, Wild Pressed Young Poet’s Anthology Dark Animals, and Cuba Presses Flash Fiction collection A Breach of All Size. She is a regular reviewer for Takahē magazine and began Common Ground Spoken Word, a popular poetry event and collective in Te Whakaraupō, Lyttelton, in 2022.
